Therapeutic Approaches

I am trained in several different evidence based, effective therapeutic approaches.

Don't worry...you don't have to be an expert in the differences between them. Helping you understand is my job. All you need to know is that therapy with me will not be overly formal and that these approaches are just a starting point.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts. We will help you change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel. This approach focuses more on current problems rather than your past. It looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it’s more readily available to us when we practice on a daily basis.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy  or “DBT” is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that teaches people how to live in the moment, cope healthily with stress, regulate emotions and improve relationships with others. It provides therapeutic skills in 4 key areas:

  1. Mindfulness
  2. Distress tolerance
  3. Emotional regulation
  4. Interpersonal effectiveness

Therapy using this approach involves the interpretation of mental and emotional processes. We aim to help clients find patterns in their emotions, thoughts, and beliefs in order to gain insight into their current self.

Applying these approaches...

Depending on who I'm working with, these approaches will be applied differently.
